Memory and Everyday Space in Wah Fu Estate
Wah Fu Estate was constructed in the late 1960s to satisfy the increasing demand for public housing. It is the first public housing estate that designed as a self-contained community in Hong Kong. In the last half a century, the residents built strong communal ties there.
‘Wah Fu’ means ‘prosperity’ and ‘rich’ in Chinese. This Estate symbolizes dream home and ideal community, where people can live comfortably and share the achievement of Hong Kong’s development.
The Hong Kong government is going to redevelop Wah Fu Estate and relocate residents to new high-rise buildings nearby. The buildings will go into history in a few years.
This interdisciplinary project is a collaboration between sociology and landscape architecture, which applied innovative methods from both disciplines to record residents’ collective memory, examine the estate’s good practice of landscape design and propose directions for better planning and redevelopment of Wah Fu Estate.
